Our Story: Restoring Manguo Wetland

The Wetlands Restoration initiative, part of SITTY's Voices of Change, focuses on revitalizing Kenya’s degraded wetlands. These ecosystems are vital for combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and sustaining livelihoods. Through local collaboration, restoration efforts, and workforce development, we aim to not only restore the environment but also create economic opportunities for local communities.

At Voices of Change, we are committed to protecting Manguo Wetland—a vital ecosystem in Limuru, Kenya that supports biodiversity, water filtration, and local livelihoods. This wetland has long been overlooked, yet it plays a crucial role in the environmental health of the region.
Our work began with a simple conviction: that conservation must start with community and be rooted in action, education, and equity.​

What We’ve Done So Far

On-the-Ground Restoration

We’ve organized clean-up efforts and native plantings to help revive the health of Manguo Wetland. These early steps are helping to stabilize the area’s biodiversity and reduce pollution.

Community Engagement:

   We’ve hosted discussions and workshops with local residents to raise awareness about the importance of wetland ecosystems, with a focus on indigenous knowledge and lived experience.

Early Collaboration, Media & Advocacy

Through the Voices of Change platform, we’ve told stories about Manguo Wetland’s ecological value, elevating it as a case study in grassroots environmental care. We’ve begun building relationships with conservationists, policymakers, and educators to explore long-term strategies for protecting Manguo.

Environmental Justice: A Fundamental Right

Just as access to justice is essential, so are environmental justice and mental health—both crucial to a dignified existence. Environmental justice ensures that everyone, regardless of background, has the right to a healthy, safe, and sustainable environment. It stands on two pillars:
✅ Distributive Justice – The fair distribution of environmental benefits and burdens.
✅ Procedural Justice – The right to participation, transparency, and decision-making in policies that affect our environment. Equity, not privilege, should determine who gets clean air, safe water, and sustainable land. The most marginalized communities often bear the brunt of environmental harm, yet their voices are frequently ignored in policy-making. True justice demands inclusive decision-making where all individuals, especially those most affected, have a say in shaping environmental laws, land use, and sustainability initiatives.
A just system must ensure that environmental policies are accessible, inclusive, and enforceable. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without social justice, and environmental justice is the bridge between the two--empowering communities, protecting resources, and ensuring a future where people and the planet thrive together. ​
